Historical background to the forming of LWML-Canada

Missionary activity by the women of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod did not start with the organization of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League (LWML). For many years prior to that time the women of various districts were engaged in mission projects within their own districts. Their achievements were so outstanding that not only the women but also the directors of mission programs began to recognize the desirability of a great Synod-wide organization of women who would undertake mission projects not provided for in the synodical work program. Several attempts to form this organization were made between the years 1929 and 1938, with no tangible results. Finally, in 1938, at the synodical convention in St. Louis, a committee was appointed to study the possible formation of an organization and to make recommendations to the synodical convention of 1941.

1941 - Synod in convention gave the approval and encouragement to create a general organization of women within the church. Five pastors were appointed to arrange a meeting of representatives from all interested districts and to serve as counselors.

1942 - Delegates from 15 districts met on July 7& 8 at St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Chicago, Illinois. A temporary constitution was adopted and temporary officers elected.

1948 - First Canadian LWML society was organized at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Bruderheim, Alberta.

1951 - Western Canadian Organizational Convention (Conference), with three societies was formed. Founding societies were: Bethlehem, Bruderheim; Grace, Edmonton; and Redeemer, Edmonton.

1962 - Synod in convention at Cleveland, Ohio, resolved to recognize the LWML as the official synodical women's organization. Women's groups were encouraged to affiliate with the LWML.

1993 - Separating from their American sisters and forming an auxiliary to Lutheran Church-Canada, which had formed an independent Canadian synod in 1988, the Founding Convention for LWML-Canada was held at the Edmonton Convention Center, Edmonton, Alberta. June 20, 1993.

To God be the glory!
